Really enjoyed I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution. It’s an oral history of the network from it’s inception through 1992, when The Real World premiered and they stopped airing music videos.
The best part of the book is when the actress who played Alice in Tom Petty’s Don’t Come Around Here No More says that Weird Al hit on her at the 1985 VMAs, but the second best part was an enormous compliment from Michael Ian Black (who was on MTV via The State). He says…
“As a viewer, MTV felt like a place that fostered an anarchic spirit, run by people who maybe didn’t know what they were doing. In a good way. It was a place to throw shit against the wall, similar to what CollegeHumor does now, or Funny or Die.”
